Tis the Season… For Christmas Music!

Okay, so it’s maybe a bit early for you but I love Christmas music and there is such a small window to enjoy it! The music is probably my favourite aspect of the holiday season, especially singing carols in church leading up to and including Christmas Day.

In no particular order I want to share with you some of my favourite Christmas albums/bands/songs.

xmas music 1Folk Angel

Folk Angel is a band that creates exclusively Christmas music. They have released a new album every year since 2009 and their fifth album is coming out in Autumn so it’ll hopefully be here soon.

I love how they have taken traditional carols and introduced their own unique, folksy style to them. If you like folk/indie you’ll probably appreciate Folk Angel. A number of their songs also feature some notable voices such as Michael Bleecker (Glorious Day), Shane and Shane, Tedashii, Lauren Chandler (wife to Matt Chandler), etc.

This band is excellent because of the prominence they give to Jesus in the majority their songs. On this basis they are probably my favourite of the bunch (I’m biased by my preference for carols though so…)

Relient K: Let It Snow Baby… Let It Reindeer

Relient K’s Christmas album is a lot of fun and you can tell they had a lot of fun making it (especially in the track Good King Wenceslas). They have a mix of carols, traditional Christmas songs and original pieces. Their rendition of ‘Silver Bells’ is the best I’ve heard, it’s almost magical in its ability to transport you to a chilly main street full of shops and hanging Christmas lights. ‘In Like A Lion’ has echoes of Narnia from The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe which, for me, is more than enough reason to love it. They also have a number of humourous tracks such as ‘Santa Claus is Thumbing to Town’ which tells the story of Santa’s elves damaging Santa’s sleigh so he has to hitchhike his way around the globe.

Lots of Christmas magic in this album!

xmas musicMars Hill Music

Mars Hill Church has a number of Christmas albums available: ‘Silent Night’ by Mars Hill Christmas, ‘Joy Has Dawned’ by Kings Kaleidoscope and ‘Christmas!’ by The Sing Team. As you’d probably expect from Mars Hill it’s an Indie Christmas with traditional carols accompanied by strong voices and electric guitars. Of particular note is Kings Kaleidoscope’s ‘All Glory Be To Christ’ which adds strongly Christian lyrics to the tune of ‘Auld Lang Syne’ so you can ring in the New Year singing something Christ exalting.

I really enjoy these albums, they’re not what you expect to hear at Christmas and they showcase the creativity possible when it comes to our traditional carols.

They are a great example of Mars Hill Church doing what Mars Hill Church does best: contextualization.

Dustin Kensrue: This Good Night Is Still Everywhere

Kensrue has an amazing voice! He does bring out the darker side of Christmas in a number of the songs. If you like Blues then I imagine his album will appeal to you. It’s not all sad songs though, he includes a number of carols in his super cool voice along with a spectacular acoustic version of ‘Fairytale of New York’.

Third Day: Christmas Offering

Deep. Southern. Accents.

O Come, O Come Emmanuel by Casting Crowns

This isn’t even the song it’s just the melody, predominately played on the violin (more bias here, sorry!).

xmas music 6Page CXVI: Advent to Christmas

This album isn’t out yet but I love, love, love the band! Everything they’ve done up to now has been awesome! The album is out on the 3rd of December but you can listen to their rendition of ‘Silent Night’ on their website. This album promises to continue the band’s legacy of excellence. I’m so excited for its release!
